CWMQG Membership Meeting Minutes 2025-05-08
Present: Althea Gyde, Aleesha Kobernik, Cassandra Miller, Cindy Rudolph, Kristen Doerr, Lesley Allan, Michelle Bartholomew, Shelly Maitland, Nancy Straub, Peggy Ross, Tamara Dezellem and Terry Murphy.
Program: Roundtable discussion re “Quilt Classes In-Person and Online”
Panel participants: Peggy Ross, Tamara Dezellem, Lesley Allan and Thea Gyde
Moderator: Michelle Bartholomew
Classes Panel has Taken:
Michelle: What was your favorite class and why:
Tamara – Block Studies with Tara; it was online and she was very accessible. Zoom twice per month plus sew afternoon once per month and she was available for questions.
Thea – Katie Pasquiny Masopust “From Watercolor to Quilt.” Instruction was excellent; class was stimulating and moved at a good pace. She was a wonderful facilitator; encouraging and helpful who considered the skills and materials each student had. The class had a long supply list including watercolor paints, bubbles to blow, etc., but she made use of everything on the list.
Lesley – The “Game of Improve” with Maria Shell. It was lots of fun; lots of gaming
opportunities, unexpected surprises and very inspiring.
Peggy – “Katie Pasquiny Masopust”; she is an artist first and a quilter second. She is a beautiful painter and she brought out the creativity that people needed when learning a new skill. She kept the class moving. Also, Jane Dunnewold with Botanical Printing. She uses natural dying
techniques, very creative.
Lesley, what benefits have you seen in your quilts as a result of taking classes? The two Maria Shell classes have helped me move forward with improv and understanding improv is more about sewing fabric together but must think about what is the big picture, refining my work. I also took a color wheel class that gave me a more nuanced view of color in quilting.
Tamara; how do you find classes to take? Mostly from Instagram. If I see that other modern quilters follow a certain artist, I will follow them too and will then see postings for classes. I also sign up for newsletters for some specific shops.
Peggy shared she finds classes through Google; specifically, “art quilting” as her search words.
Peggy; how do you decide what classes to take; subject matter or teacher? Both, but more recently I pick the teacher first. I want a teacher who is organized, is very skilled and are subject matter experts. I expect a teacher to have a deep understand of quilting and color theory.
Thea; what is the difference between doing a class by yourself or with a buddy? I think it’s better with a buddy. I choose classes/teachers with excellent teachers. I prefer organized teachers with accurate supply lists, but having a buddy makes it even more fun. You should know how your buddy quilts, organizational skills, etc. I appreciate honest feedback from fellow quilters. You can even have a buddy in an on-line class and spend time together outside of class.
Lesley; tell us benefits of taking an in-person classes versus on-line or zoom. I think the benefit of in person is “game-on”, fewer distractions. An advantage of on-line is that is easier to access and more flexible. But, there is an energy in an in-person group setting and that helps expand quilting knowledge, creativity and boundaries.
Peggy; do you have any tips for getting the most out of a class? Need to know what your learning style is and how you can access the most information. I take detailed notes so that I can repeat them later and I am a visual learner. Go with an open mind because everybody is different. Some people misunderstand what the class is about and fail to bring the correct materials. You might have to pivot if you did not understand.
- Questions from Guild members:
Are there any supplies that are usually left off of the list and you find helpful? - An apron (if painting)
- Journaling and note taking supplies
- Items that make you comfortable at your own sewing station that you can bring
- Comfort for your room ex: aromatherapy, reading materials, noise machine
- Chair seat/back if neck and shoulder pain are a problem for you
- Overabundance of thread!
- Extra needles
- Extra light
Do you have class wish list or dream class?
Thea; another Katie Pasquini Masopust class “Working in a series”. Art quilts, improv is my preference. “Empty Spools” Classes in California.
Tamara; Susan Carlson who teaches collage work, fabric dying is also an interest.
Lesley; a destination class of some kind.
Peggy; I am looking at Pine Needle retreats because they are so much fun, the locations are great, the class sizes are around 20 people.
What about snacks? Some facilities provide snacks. Try to sit with different people at
mealtimes.
How did you get your sewing machines there? Usually bring my own machine; some places have rental machines or provide machines.
Negatives? Jean Empy-Faces moves people’s project pieces without permission, too much talking and not enough hands-on.
Any teacher you would prefer the book rather than the class? Marie Shell book on Improv, although she does teach things that are not in the book. Classes are reasonably priced and her handouts are excellent. Lesley shared that the study on color theory was good in some ways, but her books are excellent and the class was too long.

- Cloth made from bark was the first textile on all continents!
- In Hawaii, the “Paper Mulberry Tree” was used to create cloth.
- The process of making the cloth is very elaborate and has been revived in recent years by a small group of Hawaiians.
- The making of this cloth was greatly reduced after 1778 when Captain Cook traded cotton cloth for the barkcloth.
- The cotton cloth was much more durable and desirable.
- Aleesha shared a documentary about barkcloth and may be viewed using the link below:
